"Board Members as Spokespersons and Advocates:
From Stranger to Superevangelist"

Thursday, February 16, 2012
8:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Effective Board members understand that their role does not end with the completion of basic fiduciary duties.  Rather, Board members who transform organizations think, act and talk differently because of their involvement with the nonprofit they serve.  One such responsibility is for Board members to serve as spokespersons and advocates for the cause.

These "true believers" are passionate about the mission of their organization and translate that enthusiasm into action, serving as effective champions for the cause outside the confines of the Board room.  In Forces For Good, Leslie Crutchfield and Heather McLeod Grant call directors who engage in this work superevangelists, pointing out that their values and interests align with the nonprofit and, in turn, "help create organizational momentum."  Given the challenges of our times, nonprofits need actively engaged, external-facing Board members like never before.

This interactive workshop will consider strategies for moving Board members from strangers to superevangelists.  Specific ideas will be presented to move directors along the Board engagement continuum, providing tools for nonprofit CEOs and Board leaders to employ as they develop external champions for the organization.
