William T. Newlin has announced that he will step down as Executive Director of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House effective July 31st after leading the agency for 23 years.   Christopher Hanway, currently Director of Development & Communications at the organization,  has been appointed to be the next Executive Director effective August 1, 2013.

“Bill Newlin has been an incredible leader at Riis Settlement and has turned the organization into a thriving, growing beacon of hope for Western Queens, said Michael Bingold, Chair of Riis Settlement’s Board of Directors. “At the same time, we are delighted to have Chris come on board as the new Executive Director. We are confident that he will provide the right combination of continuity and new strategic thinking as the organization moves forward in a rapidly changing community and economic climate.”

Under Newlin’s leadership, Riis Settlement’s organizational budget has increased 30-fold, and the agency has expanded from its headquarters in Long Island City to five campuses and added dynamic programs serving the area’s older adults and growing immigrant community. He will work closely with his successor over the next five months to ensure a smooth and effective transition. “Serving as Executive Director has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my professional career and, while I will miss what has been my second home for over two decades, it is time for new challenges for me and new blood for the organization” said Newlin. “I look forward to collaborating with Chris in the coming months as we prepare Riis Settlement for the next steps in its growth trajectory.”

Hanway has headed Riis Settlement’s fund development and communications efforts for over four years and has over 12 years of professional experience in the not-for-profit sector, most notably at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.  “I am truly honored and excited to take on this new role at Riis Settlement in service of an organization and a community that has grown very close to my heart over the past four years,” he said.

Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House, Inc. is a leading community-based non-profit service provider in Western Queens, New York, serving as a catalyst for change by supporting residents in their efforts to achieve greater social and economic self-sufficiency.  Founded in 1899, Riis Settlement provides integrated educational, social, cultural and health services to more than 1,600 individuals and families each year.  Riis Settlement’s award-winning programs support community members of all ages-- from after-school programs for children and youth to English-language classes and case management for immigrants to health services, meals, and transportation for older adults.
