STRIVE celebrated the graduation of 43 Green Job Corps young adults last Friday. The young people, ages 18-24 who completed the 4-week CORE+ job readiness workshop – a STRIVE program that has become a precursor, or “plug in,” to sector-based occupational skills training. Assemblyman Keith Wright, a longstanding Harlem representative and Chair of the Social Services Committee, was the keynote speaker at the event. The Green Job Corps graduates came to STRIVE from neighborhoods across all parts of New York City to get a foothold in the emerging green economy. Those who persist through the next 12 weeks of training in green construction, Brownfield remediation, weatherization, and solar panel installation will be among the first trained in a diverse skill set needed to compete for livable wage green jobs. “Don’t get comfortable,” Maria Ortiz, Director of CORE+ Training at STRIVE said in her closing remarks to the group. “A STRIVE graduate is always professional and has the determination to get up and try again, and again, and again, until they achieve their goal.” |
