United Way of NYC has announced the launch of BoardServeNYC, a new initiative to connect New York City nonprofit organizations with qualified volunteers to serve on boards of directors. BoardServeNYC will train 500 volunteers in nonprofit governance each year and then connect those volunteers with nonprofits seeking new board members. The announcement came at a kick-off event on Tuesday evening at which Diahann Billings-Burford, Chief Service Officer of the City of New York, was joined by Gordon Campbell, President and CEO of United Way of NYC, as well as board candidates and representatives of nonprofits. BoardServeNYC is a partner of NYC Service, Mayor Bloomberg’s ambitious plan to maximize service opportunities and increase volunteerism in New York City. “Critical to high functioning nonprofits are Boards that understand the principles of good governance and that reflect the community’s diversity of backgrounds and professional skills,” said Campbell. “United Way is very pleased to partner with NYC Service to support local nonprofits by encouraging and preparing more New Yorkers to engage in this high-impact form of volunteerism.” United Way of NYC, which works with municipal agencies on a range of programmatic and policy initiatives, possesses a broad reach into both the nonprofit and corporate communities, and has extensive experience in improving the capacity of nonprofits through training, technical assistance, grant making, and volunteer programs. Over the last 20 years, United Way of NYC’s Linkages program has systematically strengthened the capacity of local nonprofits to more effectively utilize volunteers as new board members. As of October 2009, BoardServeNYC will supplant Linkages as United Way of NYC’s publically available program to prepare volunteers for governance and to help nonprofits attract and engage new board members. “A clear need in New York City is for innovative and committed leadership in the not for profit community. There are various needs at multiple organizations waiting for talented New Yorkers to step up and meet them. BoardServeNYC is a great opportunity to provide vital services that will help nonprofits all over the City maximize resources and provide higher quality services to the communities they serve,” said Billings-Burford. “NYC Service is pleased to work with United Way to recruit and equip more New Yorkers to use their blanks to meet this need. American Express is the lead corporate sponsor of BoardServeNYC. “American Express appreciates the impact that talented leaders have on society, and is proud to sponsor BoardServeNYC.,” said Timothy J. McClimon, President, American Express Foundation. To learn more about BoardServeNYC go to http://www.BoardServeNYC.org. |
