The Brookwood Foundation awarded SCO Family of Services $1.3 million in recognition of the organization’s transformative services for Brooklyn’s families and children. The gift was part of the foundation’s voluntary dissolution plan and was presented to SCO Executive Director Gail Nayowith.
SCO Family of Services helps more than 40,000 people each year throughout New York City and Long Island, including more than 20,000 in Brooklyn. The agency’s broad array of Brooklyn programs include Nurse Family Partnership, providing pre-natal care, parenting skills, and support for young mothers; Family Foster Care and Adoption, Residential Services for homeless and at-risk adolescents, After-School Programs and Family Counseling.
The Brookwood Foundation was created in 2000 as a “supporting foundation” for Brookwood Child Care, formerly The Orphan Asylum Society of the City of Brooklyn, which was established in 1833 to provide for orphaned children after the cholera epidemic of that year. Two other organizations, Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the PTA of PS8, also received gifts from the foundation.
