The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund has awarded $300,000 in grants to six New York City organizations, enabling these non-profits to expand capacity and increase their reach. The organizations include The After-School Corporation, generationOn, New York Cares, ReServe, Taproot Foundation New York, and The United Way New York City BoardServe initiative. The grants follow the conclusion of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service held in New York City. “Volunteering is an essential way to meet community needs,” said Laurie M. Tisch, philanthropist and founder of the Illumination Fund. “We are pleased to support service organizations that will extend their reach into more neighborhoods and schools across our city and engage more New Yorkers of all ages in service”. Grant recipients include: - The United Way of New York City BoardServe Initiative that strengthens non-profit boards and links trained volunteers to board opportunities within New York City.
- ReServe Inc. to connect retired professionals with non-profit organizations needing consulting or assistance and with young people who need help preparing for college. Executive Director Mary Bleiberg said, “We are honored to receive a grant from the Illumination Fund, and to participate in their efforts to expand opportunities for community service and civic engagement in New York City. We will use our grant to expand our work in the boroughs, by recruiting more New Yorkers 55+ with the skills to - and interest in - serving in these neighborhoods.”
- New York Cares, to strengthen volunteer management activities and a new focus on evaluation and metrics.
- TASC to expand the role and reach of AmeriCorps volunteers in out-of-school time programs.
- generationOn, a recent merger between Children for Children and Points of Light to develop curriculum and service learning programs in New York City public schools and create a service learning toolkit that will be rolled out nationally to schools across the country.
- Taproot Foundation that will identify six non-profit organizations and link them to pro bono volunteers.
