Yorkville Common Pantry (YCP has received the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) 2009 Best Practice Award, and was honored by the State of New York Department of Health in a ceremony in Albany, NY.
“We are honored that the New York State Department of Health recognizes YCP’s commitment to providing the communities we serve not only with food, but the nutritional information and tools to live healthier lives,” Stephen Grimaldi, executive director of Yorkville Common Pantry. “This award recognizes our successes in providing food to those in need and our additional goal of improving nutrition.”
YCP has worked to advance nutrition in East Harlem, a community that confronts challenges such as obesity, diabetes, and limited access to produce, by offering its pantry clients and their families a series of cooking and nutrition education workshops. In these workshops participants learn how to prepare a healthful dish and are provided recipes at its end. They also receive featured ingredients so they can cook the meal at home. This program, coupled with trips to farmer’s markets and information about seasonal produce, has influenced the food habits of pantry clients.
“We are thankful to the New York State Department of Health for understanding the importance of nutrition in hunger relief,” added Grimaldi.
