Bob Gangi has announced that he will step down as Executive Director of the Correctional Association of New York on October 1, 2010.
“It is with a mixture of sadness and excitement that I make known my decision to leave the executive director position at the Correctional Association,” said Gangi. “Sadness because I will depart a job that I have loved, that has granted me the unique privilege to pursue causes critically important to our society and deeply meaningful to me, that has enabled me to live by values that sustain and move me, and that has provided me the opportunity to work side by side with a diverse group of special people: smart, able, determined, and not incidentally, good-humored.
“The excitement comes from my now having the opportunity to focus on other justice related issues that for reasons of organizational resources and/or mission we have been unable to take on at the CA. Issues that go to the very heart of the kind of society we want to live in and the kind of criminal justice system we want to operate. Issues like the deployment of law enforcement personnel that results in the starkly disproportionate arrest and confinement of poor people of color; the often harsh treatment by the police of our most vulnerable and marginalized people such as homeless LBGT youth and exploited girls and boys caught up in the sex trade; the difficult and unfair circumstances frequently confronting immigrants locked up in the city's jails and the state's prisons; and the lack of adequate research into and reporting on the causes of inmate deaths in New York's correctional facilities.”
“For nearly 30 years Bob has helped lead the fight to create a criminal justice system that treats people with dignity and justice,” said Tamar Kraft-Stolar, Women in Prison Project Director at the Correctional Association. “For the CA staff, for the many organizations and individuals whose dedication makes our coalition work possible, and for everyone whose life has been touched in one way or another by the work of the CA, Bob's presence as Executive Director will be sorely missed.” |
