Shaprio Succeeds Stein at Citymeals-on-Wheels PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 10 August 2011 21:53

Marcia Stein, the long-serving Founding Executive Director of Citymeals-on-Wheels, has announced that she is stepping down from the non-profit organization she helped create in 1981.  Beth Shapiro, the agency's Associate Executive Director, will serve as the charity's new chief.

With one brief three-year respite, Stein has been at the helm of Citymeals since it was founded 30 years ago by preeminent restaurant critic and author Gael Greene and renowned chef and cooking teacher James Beard. Over the past three decades, Citymeals has provided nearly 45 million nutritious hand-delivered meals, as well as comfort and companionship, to tens of thousands of homebound, frail elderly New Yorkers.

“Under Marcia’s stewardship, Citymeals expanded from a $35,000 program to a well-respected $18 million non-profit organization that provides food and companionship to homebound elderly New Yorkers," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.  "This unique partnership is an incredible resource for so many, and we have Marcia’s inspirational leadership to thank for helping to bring more than two million nutritious meals to seniors each year in our City.  I wish her well as she embarks on the next chapter of her life.”

“For thirty years it has been Marcia’s fierce passion and intelligence, sage political instincts, and her persuasive credibility marshalling our volunteer forces that have given Citymeals its strength, morality and a unique charisma," said Greene. "Fueling her zeal is her deeply-held belief that we owe the city’s frail needy elderly the chance to live out their years in their homes, a commitment we honor as if they were our own parents and grandparents.”

Stein will remain actively involved at Citymeals and will serve as a member of the board of directors.  In September, she will join Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs and teach a course on non-profit management.

An experienced marketing strategist, Shapiro is credited with establishing, maintaining and growing partnerships with major corporate partners including Alcoa, American Express, Con Edison, Nespresso, Toyota, MasterCard, D’Agostino’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and others. In her almost six years at Citymeals, she has  managed all public relations, advertising, online activities, fundraising and Board relations. Prior positions include service as vice president of account services at The Guild Group, a fully integrated marketing and communications agency in White Plains.

A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Shapiro came to New York to begin her career at Ogilvy & Mather.

“In her years at Citymeals, Beth has demonstrated a keen ability to lead, sharp insights into good business practices, and great media instincts," said Greene. "With each passing year, she has taken on vastly increased responsibilities. She brings to her new post a fresh vision and ideas for keeping Citymeals vibrant and committed. She honors our legacy and will assist and incite our increasingly activist board to create their own.”
