The Forestdale Fathering Initiative has been awarded a $25,000 National Responsible Fatherhood Capacity Building grant from the National Fatherhood Initiative. Forestdale was one of 26 successful applicants from a pool of 400 to receive the award.
First established in 1998, the Forestdale Fathering Initiative prepares non-custodial fathers to reclaim a place in their families’ lives. The program helps men step up to the challenges of fatherhood through recognition of how past experiences may affect their fathering roles. Intensive parenting classes, continuing education, job training and group discussions and activities all help open participants’ eyes to an alternative lifestyle. A separate program for men under the age of 24 deals with the unique challenges faced by young fathers.
“Now we will be able to rigorously develop and measure outcomes as well as expand outreach to immigrant fathers,” says Anstiss Agnew, LCSW, Forestdale’s Executive Director.
Funded largely by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), the Fathering Initiative serves over 300 families each year. For more information Scott Leach, Director at
